Protected Characteristics

At our core, we believe in equipping every child to understand and thrive in our diverse world. We emphasize the fundamental importance of respect for all members of our community and society.

Our commitment to equality means we have a zero-tolerance policy for all discrimination. We actively teach pupils to show respect for others, particularly concerning the nine Protected Characteristics established by the Equality Act 2010. This law protects everyone from discrimination, harassment, and victimization.

We ensure all students receive comprehensive teaching and learning about the Protected Characteristics defined under the Equality Act. This vital content is fully integrated into our SCARF curriculum, which is taught every week during our PSHE lessons.

Our approach uses an age-appropriate, spiral curriculum, meaning concepts are introduced simply and revisited in greater detail as children get older. While the concept of equality runs like a thread through all SCARF lessons, we dedicate specific time for in-depth study of certain characteristics. This ensures children have the time to build the understanding and positive attitudes needed to appreciate diversity.

Please see the table below for a map of where our SCARF curriculum provides this detailed coverage.
