Ribbleton Avenue Methodist Junior School

SEND

At Ribbleton Avenue Methodist Junior School, we are proud to be a fully inclusive school where all children are valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their full potential.

We recognise that every child is unique and may require different levels of support at different times throughout their school journey. Our aim is to remove barriers to learning and ensure all pupils can access an ambitious, broad and balanced curriculum alongside their peers.

All teachers at RAMJS:

  • Do everything possible to meet pupils’ Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)
  • Deliver high-quality adaptive teaching tailored to individual needs
  • Ensure pupils with SEND are included in all aspects of school life
  • Work closely with parents, support staff and outside agencies
  • Monitor progress carefully and adapt support where needed
  • Promote independence, confidence and emotional wellbeing

We use a graduated approach to SEND support through the cycle of:
Assess – Plan – Do – Review

This ensures support is personalised, regularly reviewed and responsive to the changing needs of each child.

At RAMJS, we provide a wide range of support through:

  • Quality first teaching and adaptive classroom practice
  • Targeted interventions
  • Emotional wellbeing and SEMH support through our Heart Room provision
  • Small-group Cognition and Learning support through our Nest provision
  • Speech and language interventions
  • Sensory and fine motor support
  • Outside agency involvement where appropriate

Our Nest provision offers focused support for children with cognition and learning needs within a small-group environment led by a qualified teacher and experienced teaching assistants. Teaching is personalised and focuses on building strong foundational knowledge, confidence and independence while helping children remain meaningfully included within mainstream school life.

Our Heart Room provides nurturing SEMH support through restorative practice, emotional regulation work, nurture groups, friendship groups and one-to-one support.

Mrs Roxanne Bleasdale is the school’s Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) and Deputy Headteacher. She works closely with staff, families and outside agencies to support children and ensure appropriate provision is in place when needs arise.

Mrs Bleasdale can be contacted at:

or via the school office on:

All staff at RAMJS are committed to supporting children with SEND and ensuring every child feels safe, included and successful within our school community.

ADDITIONAL LEARNING NEEDS

Some children may require provision that is additional to or different from what is ordinarily available within the classroom. At RAMJS, we aim to identify and respond to emerging needs as early as possible so that appropriate support can be put in place quickly and effectively.

Children may need additional support if they experience difficulties which impact on their learning, communication, emotional wellbeing, social development, independence or ability to access the curriculum successfully. This may be identified through ongoing assessment, observations, discussions with parents, pupil voice, progress monitoring or advice from outside professionals.

Indicators that a child may require further support can include:

  • Difficulty making expected progress over time
  • Gaps widening between the child and their peers
  • Difficulties with communication, interaction or emotional regulation
  • Challenges with independence, attention or engagement
  • Sensory, physical or developmental needs impacting learning

We recognise that children develop at different rates and that progress is not measured through academic attainment alone. For some pupils, important progress may relate to emotional wellbeing, communication, confidence, independence or social development.

At RAMJS, high-quality adaptive teaching is always the first step in supporting children. Where additional support is needed, provision is carefully planned, monitored and reviewed to ensure it meets the individual needs of the child.

What is a Special Educational Need?

This video, based on the UK Special Educational Needs Code of Practice, summarises the above, and briefly describes the broad categories of need.
