We will begin the year by revisiting and consolidating key knowledge and skills from Year 4. This will help us identify and address any gaps in learning, ensuring that every child has secure foundations on which to build their Year 5 English skills.

We will then explore the beautifully illustrated book Curiosity by Markus Motum, which tells the story of NASA’s Curiosity rover and its mission to Mars. Inspired by the text, the children will write their own space-journey narratives and mission logs.

Throughout the unit, children will develop their vocabulary, sentence construction and editing skills. They will also learn to use new Year 5 grammatical features, including parenthesis and relative clauses, to add detail and precision to their writing.
