In Year 5, children will read and explore a wide variety of high-quality fiction, non-fiction and poetry. Through regular whole-class reading lessons, they will develop their fluency, vocabulary and understanding of increasingly challenging texts.

Children will learn to retrieve key information, make inferences using evidence, summarise ideas, make predictions and discuss how authors use language for effect. We will also encourage children to share their opinions and explain their ideas clearly.

Regular reading at home makes a significant difference to children’s confidence, fluency and comprehension. Please encourage your child to read at least three times each week and discuss what they have read together. Remember to sign their reading record after each reading session.
