Year 3

Computing 2026-2027

Year 3 have computing on a Wednesday morning with Mrs Tipton. Online safety is taught discretely at the beginning of each half term and then woven into each topic. Below are the topics over the year, with examples of work added to children's seesaw account as the  year progresses.

During the autumn term children in Year 3 will be using lots of multimedia tools to create images and videos. Travelling the world using google Earth, they will visit famous landmarks around the world. They will create talking avatars of these landmarks and even use green screening to create postcards of themselves stood by the landmarks.

During spring 1 children will be looking at how to be internet secure, looking at the importance of passwords. They will then use 3D CAD to create their own 3D printed Egyptian  cartouches. The children will use a website to create their name and then added their screen shots to adobe express along with their mashcam from Purple Mash to create an Egyptian poster. We will finish the unit by coding a simple Egyptian animation on scratch.

During the second half of the spring term, the children will learn  about databases. To start they will play some top trumps and identify the features of databases, such as records and fields.  They will begin by searching and sorting different shopping databases on Smyths Toys, Tesco and Jet2's websites to complete shopping challenges.

They will then begin searching and sorting databases in Purple Mash.

Finally they will create their own databases on cities around the world from countries they had been studying in geography.

The children will be learning about coding this half term. They will begin by creating a Scratch animation showing the continents of the world. They will then move on to creating a collection game on Scratch, collecting Stone Age artefacts. They will look at the importance of sequencing their code blocks, using event, control, look, and sound blocks.

During the second half of the summer term the children will begin their topic learning about networks. They will go on a network hunt around school and create their own LAN map. We will also act out our school network with strings as cables. After learning about the school network, we will create talking avatars of the different devices on our network explaining what they do.

Moving onto the topic of Spain, we will use Apple Clips to create our own tour guide videos which will show you around the Spanish area of Andalusia. We will include captions, transitions, animations, and music! We will also use our coding knowledge to program our own animations of the word Spain—some will include costume changes, background changes, motion, and sound blocks!
