Year 6

Year 6 have computing on a Tuesday afternoon with Mrs Tipton. Online safety is taught discretely at the beginning of each half term and then woven into each topic. Below are the topics over the year, with examples of work added as the year progresses.

The Year 6 children will work on their presentation skills in Autumn 1, learning to edit backgrounds, font, transitions and animations in Keynote. They have also added hyperlinks to their presentation. Their presentations will be all about themselves or something they are interested in. They will then use these skills to create presentations based on their work about World War 1.

In autumn 2 the children will look at programming their own games to be controlled by a makey makey. Their games will involve creating code in scratch to make a character move up, down, left and right to catch an object which is randomly moving around the screen. They will plan out their games, thinking of their own themes, finding their own character sprites and their own backgrounds. Their games will involve selection, if the character touched the object score a point and variables such as score and a timer. Some example games can be found here

As part of their amazing Americas topic in spring, the children will look at the pros and cons of AI and use generative AI to create their own images and 3D worlds. The children will use Animated Drawings, which uses AI to recognise body parts and animate drawings.

Animated Drawings

The children will help train an AI program by playing Quick Draw by Google, which recognises sketches drawn by its users.

The children will enjoy using Scratch Lab AI to code and create their own face filters and games. The AI will have trained Scratch software to recognise facial features.

Machine Based Learning

The children will train their own AI programs to recognise objects of their choice. For example image recognition of apples v bananas or tigers v leopards using

They will then progress to using their trained AI in games made on scratch using

In  spring 2 the children will be  using scratch to create their own video sensing games based on the Pendle Witches.

Their programs included coding for selection using if then blocks, variables to record lives, scores and timers as well as creating their own function blocks for repeated movements in the game.

In summer 1,  the children will focus on multimedia and making adverts and content for their leavers’ assembly

During the final half term the children will learn about spreadsheets and how to input data and use use formulas to work with the data.
