Year 5 have computing on a Monday afternoon with Mrs Tipton. Online safety is taught discretely at the beginning of each half term and then woven into each topic. Below are the topics over the year, with examples of work added as the year progresses.
In the autumn term, the children in Year 5 will create their own voyage of the solar system by creating an interactive image using Keynote. They will create their own space-themed font logos, create talking planets, green-screen rocket launches, and use the masking tool to turn themselves into astronauts. They will then link all their content to their interactive image on Keynote using hyperlinks. The children will use Scratch to code their own space quiz. The quiz will include conditions and selection, as well as a timer and score variable.
During Spring 1, the children will use VR to explore locations around the world. They will then use AR to bring objects into the classroom and create VR experiences. They will also look at 3D printing and will design and print their own objects using 3D CAD software. They will create 3D designs for World Book Day, Mother’s Day, or Valentine’s Day.
During Spring 2, Year 5 will recap searching the web, how to search safely and effectively, and the difference between the Internet and the World Wide Web. They will then create their own webpages about Ancient Greece. Their webpages will contain a variety of media, including text, images, videos, and weblinks.
During Summer term 1, the children will create emotive videos on deforestation using iMovie after researching the topic online. They will also use Adobe Express to create some of their own rainforest artwork using a variety of brushes.
During the final half term of the summer, the children will look at Maya Scratch games and will create their own hide-and-seek games by adapting the code and characters of games they will explore. The games will include variables such as timers and scores, as well as if/then/else selection blocks.
